Star B.B.Q. (Byul Daepo)

Garden Grove, CA 92844

Whenever the HOV Trekker crew has an urge for Korean B.B.Q., we head down to Orange County, Garden Grove to be more specific. We were introduced to Star B.B.Q. by a friend and we were hooked from the day one.

As there are so many Korean B.B.Q. restaurants in the Southern California area, it is very difficult to decide which ones are worth the time and money. However, Star B.B.Q. is one place the HOV Trekker crew wouldn't mind going back for more.

For either $17.99 or $15.99 per person, you get a choice of meat to grill at the table. The crew usually orders $15.99 option which is same as the more expensive option but without ½ order of Beef tenderloin and Beef ribs per person.

The crew starts out with beef brisket. The servers bring out the thinly sliced meat when you order and you grill them your self. Since they are so thinly sliced, you have to keep an eye on the meat. Otherwise, they will burn right in front of your eyes. You can dip them in soy sauce and jalapeno pepper based sauce or wrap them in a rice cake wrapper with hot sauce and lettuce salad.

After beef brisket, we order black pork belly. The servers bring out a couple of slices of pork belly at a time. After you grill them, the servers will cut them to bite size with scissors or you can cut them yourself to the sizes of your liking. Pork belly is usually dipped in sesame oil sauce which is sesame oil, salt and black pepper. You can ask your server for the sauce. If you can handle kimchi, the crew recommends that you ask for an order of kimchi and grill them alongside the pork belly. You'll discover that pork belly and grilled kimchi give you new perspective on food combination.

By the time we finish with second serving pork belly, the crew is usually filled to the brim. But Daddy Trekker finishes with an order of small intestines. At first, it would seem disgusting to eat intestines but they are cleaned and marinated before served. After grilling them which will take longer than other types of meat, you can dipped them in the sesame oil sauce, the same sauce as pork belly, or the final sauce they serve initially. Either sauce brings out the flavor of the meat.

If you have any room left after eating the meat, you should try soybean paste stew with rice soup. Soybean paste stew is made with what else soybean paste (Korean style miso), tofu, potato, clam, and green onion.

The restaurant also serves steamed egg bowl which Baby Trekker loves. She will finish a bowl of rice with the steamed egg.

Banchan or side dishes are generally Korean style food so if you are not familiar with them you may not like them but you should try some of them to get the taste of typical Korean food.

Star B.B.Q. serves good quality meat but what sets them apart from other Korean BBQ restaurants, all-you-can-eat or otherwise, is their service. The wait staff is very attentive to your needs and constantly comes around to ask if you need anything. They also change grill without asking and bring lettuce salad and onion salad when the bowls are empty. In the HOV Trekker's opinion, you can't get better service at any other Korean restaurant in Orange County.

So far, the HOV Trekker crew hasn't found an all-you-can-eat Korean B.B.Q. restaurant that can beat Star B.B.Q. on food, price and service. Since our first visit, we have gone back many, many, many times and we'll go back many more times. You will enjoy the food and service and you will go back for more, no doubt.

One caution is that Star B.B.Q. opens at 5 p.m. for dinner only and the place can get crowded even on weekdays. If you arrive after 6 p.m., be prepared to wait long time for table, more than an hour during peak dinner time.
