Health Law News
States to decide new healthcare law benefits The Obama Administration announced that state governments will define medical benefits insurance companies will be required to offer to consumers starting in 2014. The new healthcare law creates internet-based insurance exchanges where Americans without work-based insurance coverage can buy health insurance. Insurance companies selling policies in these state-based exchanges will be required to cover a basic set of benefits, including hospitalizations, emergency care, newborn and maternity care and pediatric services. The law gave the Department of Health and Human Services the authority to set the scope of benefits to be offered. Under the Administration's plan, states can define their own set of benefits and may lead to some states requiring more generous benefits, such as in vitro fertilization, chiropractic therapy and acupuncture therapy, than others.
