October 3

Arthur C. Nielsen, Jr. - 2011
A business executive who transformed his father's market research firm into a household name for television ratings died in the Chicago suburb of Winnetka. He was 92.

October 5
Steven P. Jobs - 2011
The charismatic leader of Apple Inc. who transformed many industries from computers and smartphones to music and movies died. He had been suffering with illnesses including a rare form of pancreatic cancer and a liver transplant and resigned as Apple's CEO in August. He was 56.

Charles Napier - 2011
One of Hollywood's busiest character actors who appeared in hundreds of television and film roles died in Bakersfield, California. He was 75.

Rev. Fred L. Shuttlesworth - 2011
A former truck driver who became pastor of Bethel Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama in 1953 and was considered one of the "Big Three", along with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr and the Rev. Ralph Daivd Abernathy, in the civil rights movement died.
Martin Luther King, Jr. once called him "one of the nation's the most courageous freedom fighters...a wiry, energetic and indomitable man." He was 89.

October 8
Al Davis - 2011
Al Davis, lengendary owner of NFL's Oakland Raiders, died in his home in Oakland, California. He started his career in NFL as a coach and became an owner-general manager-de facto coach of the team. He was a maverick who hired the first black coach in the modern era and latino coach and fought the establishment within the NFL when he moved his franchise to Los Angeles and back. He was 82.


October 9
Edward Arthur Pauls - 2011
A cross-country skier, he invented an exercise machine that imitates the movement of gliding on skis through snow and named it NordicTrack. He died of complications from Alzheimer's disease at his home in Montrose, Colorado. He was 80.

October 12
James Van Doren - 2011
A co-founder of Van Doren Rubber Co. which makes Vans shoes popular with skateboarders died after a long illness at his home in Fullerton, California. He was 72.

October 16
Dan Wheldon - 2011
The two-time Indianapolis 500 winner died from injuries suffered in 15-car wreck during Las Vegas Inday 300, the season ending race. He was 33.

October 17
Carl Lindner, Jr. - 2011
Former Chairman of American Financial Group, Inc. died surrounded by his family. His business interests included Cincinnati Reds, Chiquita Brands International Inc. and was named as one of richest Americans by Forbes magazine in 2009.

October 20
Burt Lancaster - 1994
An actor who was considered one of the best actors of his generation and won an Oscar died of a heart attack at his home in Los Angeles, California. He was 80.

October 22
Crown Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz - 2011
Crown Prince who was first in line of succession to the Saudi throne died while undergoing medical treatments for unknown illnesses in the United States. He was the half-brother of King Abdullah.

October 24
John McCarthy - 2011
A Standford University professor known as the father of the artificial intelligence for his seminal role in defining the field devoted to deleloping intelligent machines died at his home in Stanford. He was 84.

October 26
Daniel Burke - 2011
A former president and chief executive of Capital Cities engineered a purchase of ABC television network in 1986 for $3.5 billion. He died at his home in Rye, New York, of complications from type 1 diabetes. He was 82.

October 27
Robert Pritzker - 2011
One of three brothers who built the family business fortune worth more than $19 billion which included Hyatt Hotel chain died of Parkinson's desease in Chicago. He was 85.

October 31
Gil Cates - 2011
A legendary producer and dirctor who produced 14 Oscar telecasts and served as president of the Director's Guild of America died after collapsing in an UCLA parking lot. He was 77.

John Houseman - 1988
An actor, director and producer of stage plays and films who was best known for playing Professor Kingsfield in the movie "The Paper Chase" and won an Oscar died of spinal cancer at his home in Malibu, California. He was 86.
