A jazz trumpeter and singer whose singing voice is instantly recognizable and was one of popular African-American entertainers to be loved by fans of all colors died of heart attack in Queens, New York City. He was 69.

James Arness

An actor best known for playing Marshal Matt Dillon on television series "Gunsmoke" died of natural causes at his home in Brentwood, California. He was 88.

Eve Arnold

One of the first female photojournalists to join the prestigious Magnum Photography Agency in the 1950s and best known for her candid photos of Hollywood celebrities died at a nursing home in London, England. She was 99.

Roy L. Ash

A co-founder of Litton Industries who served as director of the Office of Management and Budget during the Nixon and Ford administrations died at his home in Los Angeles. He had Parkinson's disease. He was 93.

Arthur Ashe

A professional tennis player who was the only black man to win the singles title at Wimbledon, the U.S. Open or Austrialian Open died of AIDS-related pneumonia in New York City, New York. He had contracted HIV via blood transfusions during his second heart surgery in 1983. He was 49.
