EDUCATION - ONLINE COURSES
Free Online Courses from Harvard University and M.I.T.
Harvard University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology are joining forces to offer free online courses from both universities. The new non-profit partnership, known as edX, is expected to offer its first five courses in the fall of 2012. EdX courses will offer a certificate of completion but carry no credit.

Student Loan Calculation
A new government website created by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau allows users to plug in details such as grants and scholarships to calculate what they maight owe after attending different colleges or universities. The site also allows veterans to determine what they might owe after using their GI Bill benefits. The website address is www.consumerfinance.gov/payingforcollege/costcomparison.

CA Supreme Court Considers Granting Illegal Immigrant Attorney License
After the State Bar of California certified an illegal immigrant to be a licenced attorney, the California Supreme Court ordered the bar association to explain why an illegal immigrant should be given a legal license and invited other parties to file briefs. After reviewing the written arguments, the court may hold hearings on the case.
Asians in U.S. Grew 46% in 10 Years
According to the U.S. Census in 2010, the Asian population grew faster than any other racial or ethnic groups in the U.S. between 2000 and 2010. The number of Asian Americans increased to more than 17 million during the decade. The top five cities with the largest Asian American population are New York, Los Angeles, San Jose, San Francisco and San Diego. Among the national groups, Chinese Americans top the list followed by Filipinos and Asian Indians.

U.S. Supreme Court Allows Deportation for False Tax Returns
The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in a 6-3 decision that Immigration and Customs Enforcement was within its authority to declare a tax crime of filing false income tax return an "aggravated felony," thereby allowing ICE to deport an immigrant. The case of Kawashima vs. Holden involved legal immigrants who pleaded guilty to underreporting business income in 1991 and paid $245,000 in back taxes and penalties in full. A decade later, Immigration and Naturalization Service decided to deport them and they appealed the decision. Under the Court's holding, an immigrant who files a false tax return could face tax charges and automatic deportation.

LAPD Chief Charlie Beck Backs Driver's License for Illegal Immigrants
Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck became one of the most prominent persons to support the idea of the state of California issuing driver's licenses to illegal immigrants. He cited the benefit to public safety for having illegal immigrants go through vigorous testing process. He believes, however, that licenses for illegal immigrants should not be same as standard licenses and suggested a provisional license or a non-resident license as a possible solution.

Mitt Romney Would Veto the DREAM Act
Mitt Romney pledged that he will veto any effort by Congress to pass the DREAM Act which would provide a path to citizenship to minors who are in the country illegally, provide they serve in the Armed Forces or attend college.

California Department of Resources, Recycling and Recovery launched the Check Your Number campaign to educate drivers to follow manufacturers' recommendations. Improvements in engine oils and engines lengthened the required oil change intervals to 7,500 to 10,000 for most vehicles. Waiting for the miles to reach the manufacturers' recommendations will save money during the difficult economic times and protect the environment from wasted oil.

In California, convicted sex offenders are required to register with their local law enforcement agencies. The State of California operates a website for public to check the sex offender registry to find out if any of them are living in their neighborhood. Also, beware that not all sex offenders are registered in violation of their convictions.
